Serving Domestic Helpers

The Problem

Hong Kong has over 250,000 Domestic Helpers and historically they were mainly Filipino. They had a well organized labour-dispute network and spoke fluent English. Today however, most Domestic Helpers are poor Indonesians with limited schooling and language skills. They are frequently exploited by their employment agency and when they are abused by their employers they are less aware of their rights, less able to defend themselves and less able to function in Hong Kong’s society. Sadly they are not alone: Nepalese, Sri Lankan, Indian and Thai domestic helpers often suffer the same fate in Hong Kong.

All Too Common!

Faridha was an Indonesian domestic worker in Hong Kong. She worked extremely long hours seven days a week, was given only two packets of noodles a day to eat, and slept on the kitchen floor. Her employer assaulted Faridha with a teapot injuring her teeth and chest. She required surgery. After four months of constant abuse Faridha ran away and was brought to Christian Action for help. Because Faridha's experience is all too common in Hong Kong, in 1993 Christian Action felt compelled to establish a Domestic Helpers Programme.

A New Start

Christian Action is passionate about seeing justice done to save domestic helpers from abusive employers. We have established two safe houses where Helpers can live and recuperate while their legal case is being considered.

Location Information

Our paralegals explain the workers' lawful rights, assist with their legal proceedings, liaise with the police throughout their investigation, and help them prepare for their hearings. Since a large number of cases involve sexual abuse, we also have workshops on Hong Kong's Sexual Discrimination Ordinance and their rights.

Christian Action also runs a domestic helpers training centre with classes in computer, English and financial literacy. Other vocational classes are being developed so that through education, training and mentoring these vulnerable women will be empowered to live healthy, productive lives.

Who Will Stand for Them?

Taking a stand for the defenseless is one of the most satisfying experiences one can have. Volunteer to teach English or pass on other skills - and give today!
